Below is related correspondence provided by VFW Service Officer Donald Confer:
“This is about the survival of an emergency organization. In particular Penn-Mahoning Ambulance, which covers the West Penn, Andreas, Mahoning and New Ringgold areas. It is about life a death situations.
I started talking to EMT Valerie Coombe, once president of Penn-Mahoning Ambulance. She talked about the ambulance that was damaged while on a call. It cost a lot of money to fix. She also talked about how things were going. She said they way things were going they may only have a year left.
Less than half of the residents sent their membership money in. That would have been a big help for them. I told her I belonged to the West Penn VFW and would bring this up at our monthly meetings. I told our VFW how bad things were, so we voted and all attending members agreed to give them a check for $1,000. That money came from the sale of Poppy’s at various locations. That was really great to see kids looking for change and giving their allowance as donations. It was heartwarming.
The special interest groups are always changing regulations every six months. Every needs recertified and that costs money. It is so good to volunteer your heart and mind. You will feel great. So please give a part of your life to save a life. I know, I did for along time.
If they disband, it could take up to 25 minutes for response time.”
Donations can be sent to Penn-Mahoning Ambulance, 1748 West Penn Pike, New Ringgold PA 17960.
