Seniors and alumni of Tamaqua Area High School are organizing a Suburban 5K Run and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk through the main streets of downtown Tamaqua on Saturday, October 17, 2015 in memory and support of language arts teacher Thelma Urban, who passed away unexpectedly in June.
Information on the event’s Facebook page reads, “Mrs. Urban was a teacher, mother to her two children, Sean and Violet, a wife, and friend to many. She left a lasting impact on each life that she had the opportunity to touch. On June 22, 2015, Mrs. Urban passed suddenly, leaving behind a legacy that few will ever come close to filling.”
Organizers said the superhero-themed event will benefit two scholarship funds; one for her children, as well as one for a Tamaqua graduate pursuing a degree in an English related field.

Mrs. Roseann Weinrich, along with a number of students and alumni, attended a borough council meeting last month requesting the event. They were Amber Heffelfinger, Kayla Hope, Jordan Reabold, Emily Zancofsky, Kyle Weaver, and Emily Bumbulsky. Borough council approved it.
The event will start/stage at the Tamaqua Area High School Sports complex (500 Penn Street). Registration begins at 8 AM. The 5K race starts at 9 AM, with the 1-mile fun run/walk following shortly after. Both will continue through the town of Tamaqua, primarily on Broad Street, and return back to the complex. Stadium Hill, South Lehigh Street, parts of West Broad Street, and parts East Broad Street will be closed for a short time during the race.

Organizers encourage all participants and spectators to don themselves in superhero-themed outfits.
