TAMAQUA’S FIVE POINTS WILL UNDERGO IMPROVEMENTS TO PREVENT WRONG-WAY DRIVERS

Future Improvements to Five Points Intersection, North Railroad Street, SR309, Tamaqua (31)Tamaqua’s main Five Points intersection (SR309 and US209) will undergo a number of improvements over the next month or so in an effort by the Tamaqua Borough and PennDOT to prevent wrong-way drivers from traveling north on North Railroad Street (SR309). The new revised plan, recommended by PennDOT, was approved during Tuesday’s Tamaqua public Borough Council meeting. The improvements will be paid for by the borough. Tamaqua Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt estimates the upgrades to cost the borough around $500.
Some improvements will include:
– Making the current One Way and Wrong Way signage larger.
– Adding a hanging right-arrow sign.
– Adding another Wrong Way/Do Not Enter sign on North Railroad Street.
– Painting crosshatch lines and “309 NORTH” (with an arrow) on the road at the corner of North Railroad and Mauch Chunk streets.
Borough council also brought up the idea of including LED signage above the intersection to better signal during dark hours. It was tabled until more information can be gathered.
