UPDATE: As of 3:30 PM, most officials have left the area. They are expected to be back Saturday morning.
As of 8 AM today (Friday, May 15, 2015), the 400 block of West Ludlow Street remains blocked-off to pedestrian and vehicle traffic due to a hazardous material response at a home. Officials could be seen going in and out of 416 West Ludlow Street, to include the home’s backyard.
Neighbors said police were first at the home around 10 PM last night. Other responders arrived around 4 AM this morning.
Materials found in the basement of the home could be used in the process of making a bomb or similar items. Currently, no charges have been filed against anyone who lives in the home.
On scene are Carbon County’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Federal Bureau of Investigation, Pennsylvania State Police, Summit Hill Police, Lehigh County Special Operations Team, Diligence Fire Company of Summit Hill, Lehighton Ambulance, and others.
Members of the Tamaqua Salvation Army are also on scene providing food and refreshments to the responders.
Officials on scene stated that there is no need to evacuate nearby homes. They added that documentation could last into tonight, but also noted that they might come back tomorrow morning.
Summit Hill Fire Police volunteers are restricting vehicle and pedestrian access to the area.
