Volunteers with the No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum in Lansford are celebrating 160 years of the mine with a full year of events. In addition to the museum and seasonal tour, below are some of those events.
The mine opened in 1855 and still remains the world’s oldest continuously operated anthracite coal mine. Closed in 1972, the mine was re-opened as a heritage tourism attraction in 2002.
Today, visitors ride safely by train 1600 feet into the mountainside, to see and experience first hand what it was like for our fathers and grandfathers to work underground over the past 200 years.
The museum is open from 10 AM to 4 PM Wednesday through Sunday.
Mine tours will run at the top of every hour:
May 2015: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11 AM to 3 PM.
June/July/August 2015: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11 AM to 3 PM.
