West Penn Elementary School students and staff recognized U.S. military veterans during the school’s annual Veteran’s Day Program held this morning (Thursday, November 12, 2015) in the school’s gymnasium. Veterans and family members of students were encouraged to attend the celebration. Approximated 80 veterans and family members took part or watched the program.
Below is a quick overview of the event.
Welcome was given by Steven Behr and James Fasnacht.
Kindergarten students sang “Veterans, We Thank You”.
A special video showing area veterans was also played. The video was created by teacher Jolene Barron.
Many of the attending veteran’s names and their branch of service were read aloud.
Program coordinator and music teacher Samantha Yachera spoke about why poppies are so important.
Second grade sang “Voices of Pride.”
Select third grade students read aloud Letters to Wounded Warriors.
First graders sang the song “History”.
Third grade students sang “I Love America.”
Select fourth grade students read “Letters To Veterans”, followed by the song “Free Like Me.”
Select second and fifth grade students read “Letters to Veterans.”
Fifth grade students read the Preamble to the Constitution, followed by singing “Grateful to be American.”
Guest speaker Joe Deren spoke about his experiences while in service. Deren retired last year as the school’s custodian.
Yachera praised the students for their work preparing for the program.
All veterans and guests were treated to a free luncheon by the school following the program.
