Pictured are a few community members that met during the first “Dear Tamaqua… In A New Light” community session held on Tuesday, June 9, 2015. The meeting was the first of a series of upcoming information sessions pertaining to the “Dear Tamaqua… In A New Light” community-wide event, scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Organizers stated that the event will involve dozens of volunteers and performers staged throughout the borough performing Tamaqua-related skits or monologues from letters submitted during the first stage of the Dear Tamaqua project. This will be in addition to many other attractions held throughout the streets and alleys of Tamaqua.
Many more volunteers are still needed to help make the upcoming Dear Tamaqua Extravaganza event a success. The next community session is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 7 PM at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center, 125 Pine Street. All are invited to learn or participate.
“In addition, this is our general call for volunteers, community groups to participate, reaching out to residents with road closures, traffic patterns, etc.,” said Tamaqua Community Arts Center coordinator Leona Rega. “It is also an all call for submissions of photo’s or video’s that will be projected during the event.”
During the community sessions, project leaders will provide details and there will be open discussion. All are encouraged to join in on the discussion and get the information first hand.
Topics during the sessions include:
– What to expect the day of the event.
– How your group may be highlighted during the event.
– Broad Street residents will be invited to decorate lawns and represent a special community or civic or booster club as mentioned in the letters.
– Parking restrictions and road closures.
– Taste of Tamaqua.
– Assistance with donations or loaning of materials for event.
– Submission of photo’s or videos which represent your favorite memories, a town event, or other (your club events, historical memoirs, parades, picnics, parks, pools,) ~ these can be brought to the meeting.
– Volunteers to assist with preparations for event and or assisting in cleaning after the event.
Project Background… Over the past 1½ years, the Tamaqua Community Art Center and Safety Initiative have been asking people to submit their stories as part of the Dear Tamaqua project.
Inspired by over 500 collected letters from current and former residents, the event will transform one mile of the borough’s streets. Along the route, audiences will experience local sights, sounds, and tastes while exploring the love/hate relationship Tamaqua has with itself.
“As a resident of Tamaqua since I was nine years old, I live and breathe the same love and concerns for our community as you,” added Rega. “I ask you to join me in making this event one that will be remembered for generations to come and showcase Tamaqua in a “New Light.”
