Tamaqua councilman Justin Startzel, 26, announced during the May 5, 2015 council meeting that he will be taking a leave of absence while he attends boot camp and other required training since his recent enlistment into the Army National Guard. He said his leave of absence from borough council will start Sunday, June 28, 2015 as he prepares for basic training – which starts Tuesday, July 14, 2015.
Addressing the council, Startzel said, “I do want to thank you all for working with me. This is one of the best experiences in my life so far. Now this (military service) will hopefully be even better. Thank you very much.”
Following the meeting, fellow councilman, Mayor Chris Morrison and Tamaqua Police Chief Rick Weaver praised Startzel for his enlistment and dedication to community.
Startzel remains a council member until December 31, 2015.
