NUMEROUS ITEMS DISCUSSED DURING TAMAQUA BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING (May 5, 2015)

Numerous topics were discussed during Tamaqua Borough Council’s regular public meeting held Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at the Tamaqua borough hall.
Like all meetings, residents were encouraged to attend and speak during the meeting.
Officials attending the meeting were Tamaqua Mayor Chris Morrison, Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt, borough secretary, solicitor Michael Greek, Council President Micah Gursky, councilmen Dan Evans, Tom Cara, and Kerry Dowd-Lasky. Not present were councilmen David Mace and Brian Connely.

– Councilman discussed the CRIZ. Stay tuned for a related story.
– Demolition of 216 Pitt Street is complete. Future demolitions (Gay Street and West Spruce Street) are in the works.
– Councilwoman Kerry Lasky (Chairman of Parking & Traffic Committee) motioned to approve a handicapped parking space for Helen Harahus of 433 East Elm Street. It was approved.
Council discussed the future sale of 234 Columbia Street on May 14 at 2 PM.
– Tamaqua Borough Council President Micah Gursky made a motion for councilman Dave Mace (not present) regarding the hiring of Justin Huegel as maintenance person at Tamaqua Bungalow Park. It was approved.
– Tamaqua Mayor Chris Morrison discussed the idea of an internet-base text alert system. The program would be free. Confidentiality was an issue.
– Councilman Justin Startzel, who recently enlisted in the Army National Guard, stated he will be taking a leave of absence while he attends required training. He said his leave of absence will start June 28, 2015 as he prepares for basic training – which starts July 14, 2015.
