ST. LUKE’S MINERS CAMPUS HOSTS AUSTRALIAN EXPERT ON HELPING PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC CONDITIONS

Expert on Chronic Health Conditions, Clinical Team, St. Luke's Miners, Coaldale (4)
Malcolm Battersby, MD

Malcolm Battersby, MD, from Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia, spent time yesterday (Thursday, April 23, 2015) talking with clinic staff of St. Luke’s University and Health Network at the St. Luke’s Miners Campus. Battersby, MD is the founder of the Flinders Method, a procedure for helping patients with chronic conditions.
Attending the discussion were Mark Kender, MD, Vice President of Medical Affairs, St. Luke’s Miners Campus, and a team of primary care providers from St. Luke’s Miners Health Centers in McAdoo, Hometown and Nesquehoning.
Information from a press release reads, “The Flinders Method, pioneered by Malcolm Battersby, MD, is now a national model in Australia for helping patients who are struggling to deal with chronic conditions.   The process is an evidenced based program that demonstrated progress for patients.  The Flinders Method involves working closely with your primary care provider through a motivational interviewing process that focuses on the patients’ life goals.  Mark Kender, MD, St. Luke’s Miners Campus’s Vice President of Medical Affairs, is a Master Trainer in the Flinders Method and is working the primary care staff at St. Luke’s Miners Hometown, Nesquehoning and McAdoo Health Center offices to provide this innovative service to local patients. Dr. Kender and Dr. Battersby will discuss this international collaborative effort as Dr. Battersby visits the St. Luke’s team and as they work with local patients using the Flinders Method.
Chronic Conditions such as diabetes, COPD, obesity, chronic pain and others can be life changing for patients.   Dealing chronic medical conditions can be one of the biggest challenges for patients and for primary care providers.  By focusing on and understanding a patient’s life goals and desires, the Flinders Methods brings the primary care provider and the patient together in a way that can produce positive results not  achieve through traditional medical care.”
