NUMEROUS ITEMS DISCUSSED DURING TAMAQUA BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING

Tamaqua Borough Council Meeting, Borough Hall, Tamaqua, 4-21-2015 (13)Numerous topics were discussed during Tamaqua Borough Council’s regular public meeting held Tuesday evening (April 21, 2015) at the Tamaqua borough hall.
Like all meetings, residents were encouraged to attend and speak during the meeting.
Officials attending the meeting were Tamaqua Mayor Chris Morrison, Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt, borough secretary Georgia Depos-DeWire, solicitor Michael Greek, Council President Micah Gursky, councilmen Dave Mace, Dan Evans, Tom Cara, Dan Evans, and Kerry Dowd-Lasky. Not present were councilmen Brian Connely and Justin Startzel. Tamaqua Fire Chief and Police Chief were also not present.
The public meetings are held every first and third Tuesday at 7 PM at the Borough Municipal Building, 320 East Broad Street. For more information or to confirm, call (570) 668-3444.
During the meeting, council members wore women’s shoes in support of the SARCC Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event scheduled for Thursday, April 23, 2015 in Pottsville.
Below is a simple list of actions that occurred during the meeting (page down further to view photos and a video of the meeting):
– Borough secretary Georgia Depos-DeWire brought up correspondence from the Tamaqua YMCA asking for use of the Bungalow Pool for its activities. It was approved.
– DeWire brought up correspondence from the Tamaqua American Legion announcing the Tamaqua Memorial Day Parade (Monday, May 25, 2015) and asking to permit temporary closure of US209 (and use of fire police) for the parade. It was approved.
– Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt mentioned about the possible need for another inspection of the Wabash Creek, stating the last inspection was about 6 to 8 years ago.
– Steigerwalt added that demolition is under way at 216 Pitt Street and future demolition is expected to start in the next week or two on other properties.
– Councilman Dan Evans, member, Public Safety Committee, made a motion to adopt an ordinance amending the Police Pension Plan. It was approved.
– Evans made a motion to hire Collin Leibensperger as a part-time police officer, effective immediately. It was approved.
– Councilman David Mace, Chairman, Recreation and Youth Committee, made a motion to hire Matthew Stanek as assistant pool manager at a pay rate of $12.50 per hour. It was approved.
– Mace made a motion to hire Emily Bumbulsky as senior lifeguard at a pay rate of $10.00 per hour when acting as pool manager. It was approved.
– Mace made a motion to hire part-time lifeguards and clerks for the 2015 pool season. The names were read aloud. (see video). All were approved.
– Tamaqua Mayor Chris Morrison mentioned the need for 8 tires for the fire department’s aerial truck. Motion was made to purchase them. It was approved.
– Evans brought up that our area, like many areas in Pennsylvania, are under a drought watch.
– Councilman Kerry Dowd-Lasky brought up the idea of making Cottage Avenue one way between Nescopec and Hunter Street. Nothing else was added or voted upon.
