A raging wildfire has been burning in Carbon County and a small portion of Lehigh County this weekend (April 18 and 19, 2015). Several hundred acres of the Blue Mountain have burned in the area of Bowmanstown, East Penn, and along routes 895 and 248, at times threatening structures, and calling forth volunteer firefighters by the hundreds from several surrounding areas.
These men and women have been on the job for many hours at a time, some through the night, and all working relentlessly to quell the flames and prevent them from destroying peoples’ homes and property.
Eric Waksmunski of Lehighton and his son Jesse, age 7, this evening delivered 700 bottles of drinking water and 1000 granola bar snacks, to the firefighters at the East Penn Fire Department. Firefighters were grateful for the donations of food and drink as they have been putting in long, hard hours.
The terrain in the burning areas is rough, and requires walking in and out of the woods and heavy brush with water tanks on their backs, as well as other needed equipment.
Volunteers are also at the East Penn Social Hall preparing sandwiches for the firefighters.
