Members of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton are holding a Feeder Frenzy event on Saturday, February 14, 2015 from 11 AM to 3 PM.
Event includes live raptor programs, info on feeding birds, kids crafts, winter walk.PRESS RELEASE – Beat cabin fever and head to Hawk Mountain on February 14 for a day-long event focused on feeding birds during the long winter months. In honor of Valentine’s Day, children ages 12 and under who bring a handmade valentine to hang on the wall will receive free trail admission.

“Winter is a great time to be outside and you get a completely different perspective,” says Mary Linkevich, director of communications at the Sanctuary. “The trails are peaceful, the view is crystal clear, and it’s a fantastic time to take photos and look for wildlife tracks.”

One stop by the Visitor Center viewing window will illustrate how the cold months do, in fact, bring on a “feeder frenzy,” as large numbers of winter birds gather to collect seed and drink at the heated birdbath at one of two well-maintained bird feeding stations. A volunteer naturalist will be on hand from 11 am to 3 pm to help identify the common species and explain how anyone can participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count.

Other programs include two live raptor programs at 11 am and 2 pm, a guided winter walk at 12:30 (trail fee applies), and complimentary bird-friendly coffee and hot chocolate throughout the day. The kids also will enjoy making two winter-themed crafts between noon and 2 pm: heart-shaped critters and a pine cone bird feeder.

The 2,500-acre Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is the world’s first refuge for birds of prey and is open to the public year-round by trail fee or membership, which in turn support the non-profit organization’s raptor conservation mission and local-to-global research, training and education programs.
