Members of the Clamtown Boy Scout Troop 755 took part in the annual Klondike Derby recently at Hawk Mountain Scout Camp near Auburn.
The Klondike Derby is an annual competition in which Boy Scouts test their skills in everything from fire and shelter building to knot tying and First Aid. Over 200 participated in this year’s event.
Scout leader Dale Osenbach said all of their supplies were loaded on a sled similar to a dog sled. They were then pulled from station to station all day long where they competed for bragging rights based on a judges score.
“In these events, the boys learn that skills such as teamwork and problem solving are just as important as the hands on skills they have developed,” said Osenbach.
Osenbach said on Facebook, “”Thank you to the community for supporting Boy Scout Troop 755. Through our fundraising and your generosity the boys were able to attend the 2015 Klondike Derby without spending any of their parents funds. Today the boys braved temps well below 0° with the wind chill. Despite those temps they competed in events such as wilderness survival, cooking, first aid and knot tying just to name a few. Not only did they compete, but they did so with 90% proficiency. Today our boys took another step toward becoming men!”
