CALM BEFORE THE STORM; TAMAQUA AREA TO GET 4 TO 8 INCHES OF SNOW

Although it is quiet now, Winter Storm Linus will soon be upon us. The storm is expected to drop between 4 to 8 inches of snow in our area Sunday into Monday, followed by a wintry mix of freezing rain, ice and snow.
Snow won’t start falling till around 2 PM today (Sunday, February 1, 2015). Snow showers and flurries will continue to midnight tonight, followed by heavy snow from 1 AM to 4 AM on Monday. Precipitation, primarily sleet or freezing rain, will continue until 1 PM on Monday, with on-and-off snow into the evening.
Temperatures for today will range from 26 to 34 degrees Fahrenheit. Monday’s will range between a bitter 2 degrees to 33 degrees.

The National Weather Service in State College has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Schuylkill County starting 9 AM Sunday.

It reads:

  • … WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 9 AM THIS MORNING TO 1 PM EST MONDAY…

  • * LOCATIONS… THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS AND MIDDLE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY.

  • * HAZARD TYPES… SNOW FOLLOWED BY SOME FREEZING RAIN.

  • * SNOW ACCUMULATIONS… 4 TO 8 INCHES.

  • * ICE ACCUMULATIONS… UP TO A TENTH OF AN INCH.

  • * TIMING… PATCHY LIGHT SNOW WILL DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON… BUT IS NOT EXPECTED TO BECOME PARTICULARLY STEAD OR HEAVY UNTIL AFTER DARK TONIGHT. SNOW WILL INCREASE THIS EVENING… MIXING WITH SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN FROM SOUTH TO NORTH. FAR SOUTHERN AREAS MAY SEE A COMPLETE CHANGEOVER TO RAIN EARLY MONDAY MORNING. ALL PRECIPITATION WILL CHANGE BACK TO SNOW SHOWERS BY NOON MONDAY.

  • * PERIOD OF HEAVIEST SNOW… LATE SUNDAY EVENING THROUGH EARLY MONDAY MORNING.

  • * IMPACTS… HAZARDOUS TRAVEL DUE TO SNOW COVERED ROADS. A COATING OF ICE WILL THEN MAY SIDEWALKS AND UNTREATED SURFACES SLIPPERY.

  • * WINDS… EAST 5 TO 10 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 25 MPH.
