Radio Shack, a 37-year staple in the Tamaqua area, closed its Hometown store today (Wednesday, January 28, 2015).
Today’s closure appeared to happen without public notice, although some reported seeing percentage discount signs on the windows leading up to today’s closing.
A box truck could be seen today parked outside the front of the store as employees loaded it with store merchandise and equipment.
The store moved its location from the old Jamesway Plaza in Tamaqua to the HT Commons about 7 years ago.
Unofficial reports added that the Radio Shack in Lehighton is currently serving as an outlet store or clearance hub. That store’s future is unknown.
Radio Shack Corporation, a 93-year-old company, has been fighting diminishing profits over the past 10 years. In addition, online news reports state that the corporation is trying to close more than 1,000 of it’s 5,000 stores.
According to Radio Shack’s corporate website, yesterday’s stock hit an all time low of 31 cents a share. It rose to 34 cents today. At its high, stocks reached over $49/share at the end of 1999. Late December 2010 stocks dropped down to around $18/share. December 2011 brought stocks around $9.50/share. December 2012 stocks dropped sharply to just over $2/share, with an increase of about 50 cents/share in 2013. Its  2014 year ended at 37 cents/share.
