A new Family Dollar store opened yesterday (Thursday, January 22, 2015) in Mahanoy City on the site of the former Wachovia Bank, 139 West Centre Street.
The opening comes the same day that Family Dollar corporate shareholders approved a takeover by Dollar Tree. According to Bloomburg.com, Dollar Tree’s purchase of Family Dollar, which still needs a signoff from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, would create the largest U.S. dollar-store chain, with about 12,000 locations. If approved, both chains are expected to keep their names.
According to online news reports, Thursday’s store opening in Mahanoy City served as a soft opening in preparation to the official grand opening on January 31 at 8 AM. The store will provide jobs to about 9 people. The Republican Herald website says the size is just under 8,000 square feet, slightly larger than the company-wide average of 7,500 square feet. Store hours are 8 AM to 9 PM Monday to Saturday and 9 AM to 9 PM on Sunday.
Six months ago, a Family Dollar store opened on West Centre Street in Shenandoah.
In addition, a Family Dollar store on Pine Street in Tamaqua will close on January 25 and eventually relocate to Centre Street in the borough. The Tamaqua store has been operating for about 30 years and served as the first Family Dollar store in the county.
