How did the Tamqua Area Community Partnership Came About?
On an icy, snowed-in day during the winter of 1994, Ted Block trudged down West Broad Street to Dave Argall’s office and said, “We have to do something!”
At that time, the Tidewood East Industrial Park was vacant, the train station sat blighted & burned-out, the downtown lacked vitality, the former Victoria Theatre as a hole in the streetscape, local municipalities were suing each other and a deep pessimism pervaded the land.
From that initial plea, a small group was formed called the “Tamaqua Area 2004 Partnership.” They developed and implemented a 10-year vision and to improve the region. That small group grew to be a very large group of volunteers and cooperative organizations who, after working tirelessly from 1994 to 2004, started anew for another decade of working to make Tamaqua a better place.
Twenty years ago, some said we were crazy; others said the effort wouldn’t last; and still others said nothing would come of it. Thankfully, many more people believed in the effort, rolled up their sleeves and helped in big and small ways.
Yes, there is still a lot of work to do, but we invite you to join us as we pause to acknowledge this 20-year effort. Please join us for a celebration that will highlight the achievements and recognize the people—people like you —who have made a real difference.
