PRESS RELEASE – A $196,200 state grant will help improve public safety by financing additional streetscape improvements in Tamaqua Borough, according to Senator David G. Argall (R-29).

After a competitive vetting process, the grant was only one of 62 approved across the state by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through the Multimodal Transportation Program.

“The positive impact of this project for the Tamaqua community certainly played a role in this project receiving consideration over numerous other applicants from throughout Pennsylvania,” Argall said.

The grant will fund the installation of energy-efficient lights along the Center Street Bridge over the Little Schuylkill River to improve visibility for pedestrians and motorists.

The funding will also aid in the reconstruction of curbs and sidewalks north of the bridge to the Spruce Street intersection. The reconstructed sidewalks will link the Lehigh and New England Rail Trail to the Borough’s National Historic District, Downtown Business District and Tamaqua Train Station.

“Tamaqua Borough has a lot to offer visitors and residents alike, and recent improvements to the downtown area really highlight the best aspects of our community,” Argall said.

The grant was awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority as part of the Multimodal Transportation Fund Program. The total project cost is $281,300.

“Center Street is an important entrance to Tamaqua and the bridge is a key link to the Lehigh & New England Trail. This project will dramatically improve this busy corridor as travelers and residents access our local schools, stores, library, community college and parks. This will not only be lighting that looks great, it will also improve safety in this heavily travelled corridor. This is a key investment in our community,” said Tamaqua Borough Council President Micah Gursky.
