FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE ROW HOME FIRE IN MAHANOY CITY; ABOUT 20 PEOPLE DISPLACED

Six or more three-story row homes in Mahanoy City were damaged and about 20 people displaced this evening (Tuesday, August 26, 2014) during a stubborn fire that kept firefighters busy for hours. Emergency responders from all over Schuylkill County responded to 227 East Centre Street (SR54) for a report of a working structure fire. Affected by the fire were homes at and around 217 to 231 East Centre Street.
Firefighters responding to the blaze stated they could see the smoke for miles.

Responding were firefighters and emergency services from Mahanoy City, Shenandoah, Frackville, Ryan Township, Hometown, Tamaqua, Minersville and others. Hazle Township, as well as firefighters from Luzerne County, also responded.
All residents were said to be safely evacuated.
Red Cross also responded and assisted those involved.
Normal daytime temperatures reached over 90 degrees. This provided another challenge to firefighters battling the blaze.
Online reports state one firefighters was taken to the St. Luke’s Hospital – Miners Campus for heat exhaustion. Other firefighters were also treated for heat-related issues.
Tony Blackwell, Administrative Assistant and Safety Officer, said the fire was put under control around 9 PM.
A State Police Fire Marshal is expected to assist Mahanoy City Fire Department and Police Department with the investigation.
