SCHUYLKILL UNITED WAY HOLDS KICK-OFF PICNIC; (VIDEO)

United Way Kick-Off Picnic, Barefield Park, Pottsville, 8-15-2014 (65)Members and volunteers with the Schuylkill United Way (SUW) held their Kick-Off Picnic on Saturday (August 15, 2014) at the Barefield Park in Pottsville. Organizers held the free event to celebrate the start of their 2015 campaign and to support SUW Partner Agencies. Local agencies that benefit from SUW are the Tamaqua Salvation Army, Tamaqua Meals on Wheels and Tamaqua YMCA.
In addition to food and refreshments, agency members and their families took part in various activities. Some included miniature golf, sand soccer, face painting, batting cages, and so on. The event also included visits by Dora The Explorer, Penn State Nittany Lion, and Red Cross mascots.

Giveaway bags were given away for the first 250 families. A flat screen television was also raffled off.
During the event, SUW 2015 Campaign Chairman Anthony Harbison stated their appreciation to GFS, Barefield Development Corp. (for their use of their park), Gordon Food Service, Mrs. T’s Pierogies (Wayne Holben), Wegmans (Kris Verba), Penn State Schuylkill, T-102, Comcast, Wal-Mart Logistics 7030, Boyers Food Markets (Jeanne Porter), and others.
He added his appreciation to assistant and co-chairs Eric Dreyfus, Dr. Austin, and Denise Ressler, and fellow SUW board members Kelly Malone, Michelle Halabura and Terri Conville.
“Please join me in this journey that we have embarked on,” said Harbison, who ended his speech with a quote from Dr. Seuss. “Today is your day. Your mountain is waiting. So get on your way!”
Also attending the event were Pottsville Mayor James “Jim” Muldowney and Schuylkill County Commissioners Gary Hess and George Halcovage.
The SUW supports 15 partner agencies in the county. They are American Red Cross of Schuylkill County, Avenues, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Schuylkill County, Boy Scouts of America (Hawk Mountain Council), Child Development, Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA, Salvation Army (Pottsville Corps), Salvation Army (Tamaqua Corps), Sexual Assault Resource & Counseling Center of Schuylkill County, Schuylkill County Society for Cripple Children, Schuylkill Wellness Services, Schuylkill Women is Crisis, Schuylkill YMCA, Tamaqua Area Meals of Wheels, and Tamaqua YMCA.
