Two drivers were taken to the hospital last Monday (June 30, 2014) for unknown injuries following a two-vehicle accident along East Broad Street (US209). Emergency personnel were dispatched to the area in front of 1299 East Broad Street (St. Luke’s Internal Medicine office) around 10 AM for a report of a two-vehicle accident with one vehicle on fire.
A passing motorist and employees from the St. Luke’s office provided assistance during the incident. Bettyann Kopp (office manager) called 911, while Kacie Haupf (medical assistant) and Ben Horvath (passing motorist) used an extinguisher to slow down the fire until firefighters could respond. Susan Costello (office worker) also helped by escorting an elderly woman out of one of the vehicles.
Dispatched were were Tamaqua Fire Department, Tamaqua Rescue Squad, Tamaqua Ambulance, Tamaqua Police and Tamaqua Fire Police.
Tamaqua Fire Police volunteers closed that part of US209 for about an hour.
Also providing immediate assistance were Tamaqua Police officers patrolman Rick Bekesy and Corporal Henry Woods.
Hope’s Towing removed the vehicles.
An official on scene stated that the drivers of both vehicles (a black Dodge Stratus and a black Ford Focus) were taken to the hospital for precautionary treatment.
