UPDATE: Road opened at 3:30 PM.

Patch work in downtown Tamaqua today (Thursday, June 26, 2014) caused headaches for drivers traveling north on West Mauch Chunk Street (SR309) in the borough. West Mauch Chunk Street was closed while PennDOT patched large sections of the roadway. SR309 (Center Street) traffic was detoured onto East Broad Street, then north on to Pine Street towards SR309.
Tamaqua Fire Police volunteers were dispatched around 9:30 AM this morning to help relieve congested traffic at the intersection of Pine Street and East Broad Street and the intersection of Pine and Mauch Chunk Street.
Prior to the arrival of the fire police, some drivers (on Facebook) said it took up to 20 minutes to driver through the borough.
Some drivers praised the work of the PennDOT crews, stating their appreciation for fixing the pot-hole covered road. One driver, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “One day of headaches is well worth a year’s worth of smooth driving.”
Tamaqua Volunteers group provided food and drinks to the three fire police volunteers.
Work is estimated to be complete between 3 and 5 PM today.
