Pictured around 6 PM today (Tuesday, May 10, 2014) is an overflowing garbage container at the Depot Square Park in Tamaqua. Some inconsiderate individual filled this container over the rim with garbage.
Sadly, all the containers at the park were emptied recently in preparation for this weekend’s Tamaqua Summerfest.
The Depot Square Park, like all parks in Tamaqua, are mostly volunteer run.
When you see this, what goes through your mind? What do you say to yourself? Do you ignore it?
Some think the borough should do it. Some think volunteers should do it. Some just don’t care.
As of 8:20 PM tonight, the garbage container remains overflowing…
UPDATE: Garbage was removed by three volunteers around 8:40 PM.

Thank you to the three individuals who took initiative and removed the garbage. Sadly, (but gratefully) the individuals that removed the garbage were a councilman, park volunteer and local EMT volunteer – not a random person who read my post or website. This post was a test to see if any “random” person (not regular volunteers) would read my post or website post and get involved. The test failed.

It would have taking you less time to just clean it up yourself than it did to take pictures, drive home, and complain about it on the internet.

Paul, The story was a test to see if any random person gets involved – as I routinely empty the garbage cans at the park.
After posting this article on Facebook and this website, only three individuals responded. Sadly, those individuals were “regular” community volunteers, not random people, like you.

Conclusion: From stats on both my Facebook and my website, over 320 people read my post within the first 15 minutes. An additional, 270 read my post between 15 minutes and 30 minutes. The garbage was cleaned about 45 minutes after the post. That is 590 people that read my post, but didn’t or wasn’t able to help. I’m not judging anyone, just want to see if my website and Facebook postings are accomplishing anything.

At least the put it in the.garbage can and.didnt litter the park up like some other places in the area.
