
The United States Department of Defense (DoD) announced that Captain Jason Benjamin Jones, 29, formerly of Orwigsburg, died Monday (June 2, 2014) of wounds from small-arms fire in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Jones, a 2003 graduate of Blue Mountain High School, was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
He was deployed to Afghanistan in April, where he was placed in charge of a 12-person Special Forces Team known as the Green Berets. The incident leading to Jones’ death is still under investigation.
Army Special Forces Command stated this was Jones’ second deployment in support of Overseas Contingency Operations.
Jones is survived by his wife, sister, parents and grandparents.
A memorial service is being held 1 PM this Saturday (May 7, 2014) at the First United Methodist Church (330 West Market Street) in Pottsville.
