Padora’s Italian Bakery made too much Italian bread today and is donating 18 loaves of bread to the Tamaqua Salvation Army. If you want a fresh loaf of bread, simply stop by the Salvation Army, 105 West Broad Street, tomorrow (Tuesday, April 29, 2014) from 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM. One loaf per household. First come, first serve. Sorry, no delivery available.
The bakery’s oven was built near the turn of the century under the ownership of George Dallas. Built of special firebrick, the oven measures 21 by 20 feet and reaches a temperature of 650 degrees Fahrenheit, taking 10 minutes to bake 375 one-pound loaves of bread. It requires two tons of buckwheat-sized hard anthracite coal monthly. It is the only bakery of its kind in Pennsylvania.
Lawrence “Mickey” Padora, 87, now semi-retired from the bakery for health reasons, has worked at the bakery since he was 13 years old. The bakery is now operated by his son Larry Padora.
Currently, the bakery makes between 300 and 400 loaves a day.
