Tamaqua firefighters and forestry crew members with the South Ward Fire Company were called around 6:50 PM today (Saturday, April 26, 2014) to battle a fast-moving brush fire in the Dutch Hill section of Tamaqua.
A resident called in the fire after see smoke rising from behind the 600 block of East Elm Street. The property is owned by BET Lehigh Real Estate.
Firefighters arrived to see between 500 and 600 square feet of burning brush. The fire was placed under control within 15 minutes and completely extinguished within 45 minutes.
Police and firefighters on scene said high winds and dry air helped to fuel the fire. They added that the cause of the fire was a recently abandoned campfire.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call Tamaqua Police.
