Tamaqua firefighters were called to 3 unrelated carbon monoxide (CO) calls Thursday into Friday. No serious injuries were reported in either incident.
The first call came out around 1:45 PM on Thursday (March 20, 2014) at 21 Market Street after a neighbor spotted dark smoke coming from the back part of the home. Firefighters determined it to be related to a malfunctioning oil burner.
The second call was around 8:15 AM on Friday in the area of 319 West Rowe Street. The cause was also related to a malfunctioning oil burner. Firefighters said the CO levels in one of the affected homes reached over 700. The residents and adjacent neighbors were evacuated, with one being checked by paramedics.
The third call came out around 12:45 PM at the duplex home located at 533 East Broad Street after the resident’s CO detector alarm activated. A woman evacuated from the home with her dog. Firefighters responded and found CO readings of 300 in her home and levels reaching under 800 in the basement of an attached condemned property (535 East Broad Street). The cause was determined to be from contractors using a propane heater inside the basement of the condemned property.
Fire police directed traffic around all three incidents.
