BLUE RECYCLING BINS TO GO AWAY IN HOMETOWN; REPLACED WITH ROADSIDE PICKUP

???????????????????????????????Today (Thursday, March 13, 2014) will be the last day for people to place recyclables in the blue bins located next to the Hometown Fire Company in Rush Township.
The recycling site has been replaced by roadside pickup, as well as a new drop-off site located in the parking lot of the Rush Township Municipal Building.
Effective March 1, 2014, Rush Township has added curbside recycling to the services resident’s currently receive with the municipality’s trash contract. Advanced Disposal Services (ADS), of Northampton, has been collecting curbside recycling along with resident’s normal trash pickup.
Rush Township Supervisor Robert Leibensperger said about 1,600 35-gallon wheeled-carts were dropped of at each Rush Township property. He added that it took three days for ADS to drop all of them.
A public notice reads:
“Recycling will be collected weekly on the same day as your current trash pickup. The containers are to be used only for recyclables. Any wheeled-cart containing household trash will not be collected.”
A separate truck is being used for the collection of recyclables.
Materials collected include glass, aluminum, steel and bimetal cans, newsprint, magazines, phone books, cardboard, plastic bearing a #1 through #5 on the plastic container. All items can be placed into the container comingled – meaning there is no separation of recyclables needed.
The notice adds that no window glass, mirrors, Styrofoam, needles or medical waste will be accepted.

“Roadside pickup is an easier way for township residents to recycle,” said Leibensperger. “We are looking to the future of our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”
Leibensperger added that the township expects recycling pickup to lessen the amount of waste transported to the landfill, thus lower for a lower contracted tonnage. “Currently, the average cost for tonnage is around $122.”
