Seats are limited for this year’s CancerTelethon.org Cancer Fighters’ Dinner scheduled for Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the New England Fire Company in Tamaqua. The event, which costs $25, will include guest speakers and an awards program for a number of area volunteers.
Featured speaker will be Richard C. Wender, M.D (appeared on Katie Couric show March 13, 2014) who served as the American Cancer Society’s Chief Cancer Control Officer In 2013. Dr. Wender became the Senior-Most Staff Leader of the Society’s National and Global Cancer Control Initiatives. He will discuss the Society’s efforts to focus on the most effective strategies to fight cancer on a national and global scale.
The event will also include a special appearance and performance by Bryn Harvey, who was awarded Miss Wilkes Barre/Scranton 2014. Harvey will compete for the title of Miss Pennsylvania (America) in June, and continues to promote and advocate for her platform of Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness. She is a weekly volunteer at Candy’s Place, The Center for Cancer Wellness in Forty Fort, Pa., as well as being involved with the Pa. Breast Cancer Coalition.
Receiving appreciations during the dinner will be:
– Peggy Zimmerman to receive a top ACS Honor, the “Chairman’s Award” for 50 years of Volunteer Service.
– Lee Shafer/Shafer’s Pharmacy to receive “Business Patron” award for 35 consecutive years of Sponsorship of ACS Telethon.
– Hope’s Mini Mart  to receive “Fundraiser Spotlight” award for their innovative, year-round fundraising.
– Maury Rutch/Shellshocked Churchhills to receive the “Cancer Fighter” award for years of telethon performances and benefit fundraisers.
– Kim Semmel/Dance with Kim to receive Patricia A. Haughton award for years of direct fundraising and telethon performances.
– Andrew Leibenguth to receive CancerTelethon “Generation Next” award for his work in bringing ACS Telethon to new audience through online streaming.
– Kathy Dombrosky to receive the CancerTelethon “Volunteer Extreme” award for years as a “go-to” volunteer in a range of roles at the Carbon-Tamaqua Unit.

Cocktail hour will be from 5 to 6 PM.
Dinner will start at 6 PM. Menu includes salad w/bacon dressing, turkey, roast beef, filling w/gravy, carrots and green beans, dessert and coffee.
The program begins at 7 PM.
The venue is located at 7 Miller Lane in Tamaqua.
