Two Coaldale blocks were without power tonight (Feb. 28, 2014) following sparking power lines and a possible blown power transformer in the borough.
At 8:26 PM, police and firefighters were called to the 100 block of East High Street for a possible house fire. After arriving, firefighters quickly determined the incident to be related to a sparking power transformer located on 3rd Street – between East High Street and East Moser Avenue.
Homes without power were those on 3rd Street between East High Street and East Lehigh Street.
Firefighters on scene stated that the electric sparks were so bright, they could be seen on the opposite side of the borough.
Nearby Coaldale resident Tina Fletcher said the large sparks resembled a bright fireworks display.
Coaldale Police, Fire Company and Fire Police are currently detouring vehicle and pedestrian traffic away from the area until PPL crews arrive.
Outdoor temperatures in Coaldale tonight will range from 8 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit.
As of 10 PM tonight, PPL’s online power outage map online showed 15 PPL customers in Coaldale without power.
PPL restored power to the homes before 11:45 PM.
