The Tamaqua Area High School Swim Team was treated to a fire truck parade and celebration party yesterday (Feb. 8, 2014) following the Schuylkill League meet at the Pottsville’s Ned Hampford Natatorium. Both the girls and boys worked hard during the meet, with the girls earning the Schuylkill League Championship.
Immediately following Saturday’s swim meet, the Tamaqua Police Department, along with fire companies from Tuscarora, Brockton, MaryD, Walker Township and Tamaqua, gave the team a grand parade from Brockton to Tamaqua. The parade ended at the Tuscarora Fire Company, where a celebration was held.
According to an article in the Republican Herald newspaper, Butkus, a Tamaqua senior, won four events to finish her Schuylkill League career with 12 gold medals. The three-time PIAA qualifier repeated as champion in the 50 freestyle (24.96) and 100 freestyle (54.88), while helping the Blue Raiders’ 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams to victory. The article added that Butkus won the 200 freestyle and 50 breaststroke as a freshman, then captured three events in both her sophomore and junior seasons.
