“If we had more evening volunteers, we would be able to open the gymnasium even more throughout the week,” said Major Sharon Whispell, Tamaqua Salvation Army. “Open Gym volunteers would provide supervision for people when they use the gym. It would also give our youth a fun and safe place to go after school.”
Due to the lack of steady volunteers, the gymnasium is only open during planned Salvation Army events or via other community organization.
Dina Depos, programs director, added, “Open gym times can be made to fit the hours of the volunteers, although after-school hours will help the most.”
Whispell stated that they looking for 3 to 5 community members (ages 18 and up) who are able to volunteer two or more hours a week at the Tamaqua Salvation Army. Their main role will simply be to provide supervision to anyone utilizing the gymnasium.
If you are a community member in good standing and willing to volunteer regularly, call the Salvation Army at (570) 668-0410 during the week between 9 AM and 3 PM or (570) 668-1234 anytime.
