WATER MAIN LEAK CAUSES ROUTE 309 DETOUR IN TAMAQUA; NO WATER BOIL ADVISORY
Tamaqua Fire Police volunteer John “Jack” Bowman detours northbound traffic at the Five Points intersection.
SR309 northbound at the Five Points intersection remains closed to traffic as Tamaqua borough crews work hard to repair a leak from a 12-inch water main along West Mauch Chunk Street. Tamaqua Fire Police volunteers, staged at three intersections, are redirecting the northbound traffic towards East Broad Street, and then back onto SR309 via Pine Street.
Borough crews stated that there is no water boil advisory since the leak is under positive pressure and not exposed to any contaminants. Water boil advisories are only issued if contaminants get into the water.
Crews were alerted to the leak around 7 AM today. Tamaqua Fire Police volunteers have been directing traffic since about 8 AM.
A stainless steel repair clamp will be used to repair the 12-inch water main.
In a statement during the last water main leak, a borough official stated that most of the water lines throughout the borough are over a 100 years old.
Repairs are expected to be complete by 4:30 PM.
