Blue Mountain (SR309) is now reopened following a double-fatal crash that occurred in Lynn Township (Lehigh County) just before 3 PM today (Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014).
West Penn Township Fire Police, along with West Penn Police and West Penn Fire Company, were asked by State Police to shut down West Penn Pike (SR309) on the West Penn Township side of the Blue Mountain. Traffic was detoured at the SR309 and SR895 intersection.
Both lanes of the Blue Mountain were closed to non-local traffic while State Police did accident scene reconstruction.
Lehigh County radio dispatch said the crash involved a pickup truck and work van.
According to the Morning Call newspaper’s website, State Police reported that the driver and passenger of the truck were both killed at the scene. It adds that the preliminary investigation shows the pickup truck was traveling north on SR309 when it lost control, veered into the southbound path of the work van.
The driver of the work van was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.
The crash occurred near Mountain Road and a few miles north of Northwestern Lehigh High School. At the time, the area was said to be covered with a thick fog and patches of snow and ice.
