As of 7:15 this morning (Wed., Feb. 5, 2014), Tamaqua has received about 3 and a half inches of heavy snow and sleet.
Weather forecast for today calls for 4 to 8 inches of snow, combined with a mixture of sleet and freezing rain. Temperatures today will just slightly below the 32 degree freezing mark.
Snow showers will be intermittent throughout the early morning. The wintery mix is expected to end around 11 AM. Light freezing rain will continue afterwards until about 2 PM. The rest of the day will remain mostly cloudy with small chances of precipitation.
From Tamaqua Area Weatherman on Facebook at 7:30 this morning:
“I have 3.5 inches of snow/sleet compacted. Before the official changeover to all sleet, I had 2 inches of snow. It’s done a hell of a job compacting so I’d say out of that 3.5 total, there’s a good 2 inches of pure sleet.”
A winter storm warning is alerting everyone of the dangers of driving in these types of driving conditions.
Even after the accumulation, roads will remain or continue to freeze and make for very dangerous traveling conditions. In addition, frozen trees branches and power lines may also result in blackouts.
All area schools are closed for today.
Thursday’s weather is expected to be sunny with occasional cloud cover.
