Pictured yesterday, Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, is the orange mine drainage treatment pond at the base of Mount Pisgah in the southeast section of Tamaqua. This facility was built in 2003 after the Department of Environmental Protection required Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company to reclaim former mine lands on the mountain. The draining water is mixed with lime, which results in an orange color from iron filtering out of the water.

I hope the breast of the dam holds. The history of ponds bursting and emptying onto coal towns is long and sad.
