2009 Kellner's Dam Fishing Derby

We held our annual Kellner’s Dam Fishing Derby in Tamaqua on Saturday April 25th and Sunday April 26th 2009 for children ages 4 to 15.  During these two sunny days, over 250 kids came and registered for the free fishing derby.  Over 70 prizes were given out for catching any of the tagged fish.  Prizes consisted of fishing poles, tackle boxes, bicycles, nets, and many other fishing items.  We stocked our dam with over 900 fish for the kids to catch during the two day derby.  Prizes and trophies were also given out to both boys and girls for the biggest fish caught.  Mayor Christian Morrison also gave the Mayor’s Award for the first palomino caught.  Although the dam was heavily vandalized by youth, it didn’t stop the Kellner’s Dam Association, many volunteers, and local businesses to have the dam up and running for the two day fishing derby.  A new pavilion and canteen addition were completed only a few days prior to the derby.  Food, drinks, and buttons were also sold to help pay for their next fishing derby.  A large new updated wooden donation display appreciation board was also constructed to replace the one that vandals threw in the dam.  Even though the fishing derby is over, children aged 4 to 15 can still try to fish for the many remaining uncaught fish at the dam everyday from dawn to dusk.

Many children came and enjoyed their sunny weekend at our annual fishing derby held April 25th and 26th 2009.  Our annual Kellner’s Dam fishing derby was a great success despite heavy vandalism done there in past months.  In addition to awards given out on Sunday, over 70 prizes were routinely given out for catching any of the tagged fish.  Prizes consisted of fishing poles, tackle boxes, bicycles, nets, and many other fishing items.  Pictured from back left, are Kellner’s Dam Association trustee Bud Paisley, Secretary Amy Bieniek, trustee Jim Bieniek, trustee Joe Marcin, trustee Howard Boyer. Pictured from front left, are Kellner’s Dam Association President Pete Bieniek Jr, girl’s largest fish caught award recipient Billy Joe Yemm (21.5 inches), Tamaqua Mayor Christian Morrison with his dog “Hurst”, boy’s largest fish caught award recipient Thorn Devlin (21.75 inches), Kellner’s Dam Assocation Vice President Pete Bieniek III, and treasurer Andy Whetstone.
