Instead of traveling far for entertainment and good deals, people enjoyed free community services and affordable items from vendors and local sellers at the Tamaqua Salvation Army's new Monthly Community Sale and Fair held at the Tamaqua Salvation Army Community Center. The turnout for the Tamaqua Salvation Army's first new monthly community sale and fair was amazingly overwhelming. At the start of the sale, the amount of people waiting to enter the Salvation Army Community Center stretched far outside the Salvation Army building and onto the sidewalk. Over 500 people and families from all over came to see what kind of deals they could get for the almighty dollar. The community sale and fair consisted of over 40 rotating vendors and local sellers from throughout our region selling crafts, antiques, electronics, niknaks, toys, dolls, artwork, books, clothing, appliances, furniture, model train items, DVDs, jewelry, collectables, and local services. The event also offered free face painting from volunteer Dina Depos. Professional Massage Therapy of Tamaqua also provided free massages on a massage table with any donations to the Salvation Army. Local business vendors, such as D.H. Double Hard Cleaning Service of Tamaqua, provided discounts and free service coupons as a way to promote their business. Some of the door prizes given away consisted of Wal-Mart gift cards, Boyers gift cards, Subway gift cards, one hour massage, Tamaqua YMCA youth monthly memberships, free monthly sale table rentals, and Easter collectables. The Salvation Army also had furniture and other items available in addition to selling fries, pierogies, barbecue, hot dogs, chips, and drinks. DJ music entertainment was provided at no charge by community sale and fair volunteer organizer Andrew Leibenguth. Many new ideas, vendors, free entertainment, and services are planned for future community sale and fairs at the Salvation Army. Next month, Leibenguth will have many tables of items from his tour in Iraq on display as well as a picture slideshow. Free face painting, free massages, free entertainment, and door prizes will be provided every month. The new Salvation Army monthly community sale and fair will be held the first Saturday of every month at the Tamaqua Salvation Army from 10 AM to 3 PM. Vendors and sellers can setup two hours early.
The next sale and fair is scheduled for Saturday July 11th, 2009 from 10 AM to 3 PM. Anyone wanting to rent a spot is encouraged to call (570) 668-0410 or (570) 668-1234 anytime to arrange for your spot before they are sold out. Each spot includes a six foot table and chair at no additional cost. The Salvation Army is asking for any volunteers that want to regularly help out with this event. Leibenguth said, “We hope our new monthly community sale and fair will continue to be a great new community benefit by offering manys ways for people and businesses to save and make more needed money during these tough times.”
